Following the band's self-titled six-track EP, released in 2003, Aust was replaced by new guitarist Stuart Ross. Guitarist Jeff Aust had been in Hamartia, while guitarist Ryan Morgan, bassist Kyle Johnson, and drummer Branden Morgan ( Ryan's brother) filled out the lineup. Singer Jesse Zaraska had the highest profile, having worked with 7 Angels 7 Plagues, and the Canadian hardcore act Compromise, who had broken up in 2002 following the death of two of their members in a car accident. Misery Signals formed in Wisconsin in 2003, featuring members of a number of regional hardcore and emo bands. Since debuting in 2004 with the Devin Townsend-produced Of Malice and the Magnum Heart, the band have issued a string of versatile and acclaimed long-players like Controller (2008) and Ultraviolet (2020) that have helped establish them as one of the more original and influential acts of the genre. Enjoy.Melodic metalcore outfit Misery Signals blend math rock tropes like tricky time-signature shifts and knotty guitar parts with the raw aggression of post-hardcore and the seismic world-building of post-rock, creating a sound with more emotional heft than the former yet that is also less monochromatic than the latter.

The rhythm section also keeps things diverse, as well as solid.

The guitars do display some stunning fretboard fury and harmonies, as well as some heavy chugging parts, but can also play some lush, gentle, clean chords to balance them out. Every instrument plays a crucial role in creating each song, and they all do an excellent job of knowing when to display some technical prowess and when to hold that back. The band is made up of incredibly technically proficient musicians, who can lock in super-tight with each other, even through some very challenging parts. The vocals are really guttural and intense (though they are broken up with some clean portions), which when paired with the lyrics, make up the "emotional" aspect of the band (though I'm well aware of the many qualms with using that term). They've put out two full-lengths, with a third one coming later this year, and a split with a great band called Exalt that everyone should check out as well.

A few different genre tags could be attached to them, such as hardcore, metalcore, emotional hardcore, melodic hardcore, progressive, whatever. Counterparts are a five-piece band from Hamilton, Ontario that began in 2007.
